The Cartography of Displacement
In my study of "Invisible Cities" I explore the concept of place as defined by cultural nomenclature. A collection of city maps are dissected and adjoined with thread so that their depicted rivers unite. This effect is enhanced through the concealment of all nominal text by white correction fluid. The map is then Xeroxed and spliced, with the copied pages being rearranged to form new urban blank-scapes representative of each letter of the alphabet, and finally transferred onto clean cartridge paper. As the thread is replicated into ink, the idea of line-depth and the play between the multiple dimensions of drawing presents itself.
